Visiting Ferret Breeders

It’s always important to choose a quality animal whenever you decide to get a small animal for a pet, and ferret breeders can help you pick the right one.  You should start your search for a small pet by figuring out if a ferret will be the right fit for your family.

Ferrets live for about six to 10 years.  They spend anywhere from 14 to 18 hours a day sleeping, but their sleeping times are usually cut up into two to six hours each.  Ferrets are very active animals, and they love to get out of their cage and get plenty of exercise.  They’re also very curious, which means they will get into everything.  Ferrets love to play hide and seek, and they will often build a nest using small things from inside your home.  You’ll know the ferret is excited if you see it doing the weasel war dance, which is basically a bunch of sideways hops.  The weasel war dance also means the ferret is ready to play, so watch for the behavior at all the ferret breeders you visit.

Like dogs, ferrets do tend to nip at people when they’re young, but you can train them out of that behavior.  Ferrets can also be trained to use a litter box, just like cats.  Ferrets are very flexible creatures, so you need to make sure you don’t have any open drains or holes inside your house.  Ferrets love to explore, and they tend to get stuck in tight places if you don’t keep them covered.

It’s a good idea to visit several ferret breeders after you decide a ferret will be a good fit for your family.  Be sure to ask each of the ferret breeders a lot of questions.  You’ll not only learn valuable information on how to care for your ferret when you get one, buy you’ll also be able to tell if each ferret breeder knows his stuff.  Choose a ferret breeder that’s knowledgeable and open to sharing information about caring for ferrets.  Visiting several ferret breeders will also allow you to do some comparison shopping on prices.

Buying your ferret from one of the many ferret breeders in your area is a good idea because you can be sure you’ll get a quality animal.  You’ll be able to see what kind of conditions the animals are living in.  You’ll also be much more likely to get an animal that’s free from disease.  Ferret breeders do tend to be more expensive than pet stores, but it’s worth it to get a healthy animal that wasn’t raised in deplorable conditions.

You’ll also probably avoid a lot of veterinarian visits if you buy your pet from a breeder.  Ferret breeders are trained to breed healthy ferrets that are free of genetic disorders.  If you buy a ferret from a pet store, you have no way of knowing if the animal has genetic disorders just waiting to be discovered.  Genetic disorders can be very expensive to fix, and they usually require surgery.
