Ferret Hunting
A Quick Guide to Ferret Hunting
Ferret hunting is a practice that has been around for a long time; for centuries hunters have been using ferrets to help them hunt down rabbits and other types of rodents. Hunting with ferrets has grown to be a custom in regions of the world where there is a large rabbit population, such as England and other areas of Europe.
Ferrets are a great way to hunt down small animals and rodents; these animals are naturally built to chase down rodents and their instinct is to keep going until they find what they are looking for. One advantage to ferret hunting is that unlike using other types of animals, such as dogs, ferrets can chase rodents even if they disappear into a hole in the ground.
There are a number of people with pet ferrets that are interested in ferret hunting, but it’s important to realize that this isn’t really all that easy. Although the ferret is a natural hunter, it is still necessary for the ferret to be trained properly in order to be any help to a human hunter. In addition to this, it is also significant to realize that not all ferrets are cut out for ferret hunting. For example, it is common to use a female ferret as apposed to a male ferret due to the problem of the male eating its prey after catching it.
In the event that your ferret does eat its prey while ferret hunting, you will run into the problem of the ferret going to sleep right after it has eaten. If this does happen, you’ll end up having to dig your pet, as well as whatever it has caught, out of the hole.
One method of being more successful at ferret hunting is to help your pet ferret with his or her job by blocking all exit holes except for the one in which you want the ferret to exit. Put a purse net over the hole so when the animal comes out it will go directly into the net, which is often a very good means of containment. This is the most traditional method of keeping track of your ferret while ferret hunting, but there is the alternative of putting a tracking device on the ferret’s collar so that you can easily find the animal at the end of the hunt. Another trick is to use a white albino ferret; they are much easier to locate when you need to find them.
Ferrets are great hunters, and training your ferret for ferret hunting is also fairly easy because hunting is a part of their natural instinct. What you will need to do is help your pet ferret fine tune his or her talents so that they are useful for ferret hunting for you.
Some additional tips for ferret hunting include making sure that it is legal to hunt with ferrets in your area. Although it is legal in most places in the UK to hunt with ferrets, in the United States it is illegal in a lot of areas. Once you are sure that ferret hunting is legal in your area, make sure that you have the permission of the landowner before trespassing on someone’s properly.
When ferret hunting is it best to use at least two ferrets. The reason for this is that if you only put one ferret into a rabbit hole, the rabbit will just run out of a different hole, with two it is more difficult for the rabbit to do this.
At one time hunting with ferrets was considered to be poaching, but today, ferret hunting is viewed at as a great way to control the rabbit population.
